Supreme Court Celebrates 75th Anniversary, CJI Khanna Emphasizes Its Role as “People’s Court”

As the Supreme Court of India marked its 75th anniversary, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna hailed the institution as a beacon of democracy, responsive to the needs and aspirations of over a billion Indians. During a ceremonial session to celebrate the anniversary of the court’s first sitting in 1950, CJI Khanna outlined the court’s evolution and its pivotal role in shaping the democratic fabric of the nation.

CJI Khanna described the Supreme Court as “the world’s most vibrant and dynamic apex court,” emphasizing its unique position as a true people’s court that ensures the multitude of Indian voices are represented. “The court remains accessible to the common public, and in its diversity of the judges in these courtrooms, the multitude of voices find representation at the highest level of our judiciary,” he stated.

Justice Khanna categorized the Supreme Court’s history into several distinct periods, each characterized by its response to the challenges and needs of the times—from the early years of establishing its foundational principles to recent decades focused on expanding and consolidating fundamental rights.
