In a significant ruling on Saturday, the Sealdah court found Sanjoy Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The verdict arrives after a rigorous in-camera trial that began in November last year, concluding 162 days following the tragic incident on August 9, 2024.
Presiding over the case, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das announced that the sentence for Roy would be pronounced on the upcoming Monday. Roy faces charges under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1), which cover penalties for murder, including the possibility of death or life imprisonment as outlined under Section 103 (1).
As the court delivered its decision, Roy maintained his innocence, claiming he had been framed. Judge Das noted that Roy would have the opportunity to present his case before the sentencing.
The verdict has been a source of some solace for the victim’s family, who expressed their gratitude towards the judiciary. “We thank the judge for upholding our trust in the judicial system,” said the medic’s parents, reflecting on the court’s decision to hold Roy accountable for the heinous crime.
