A local court is set to make a crucial decision on April 15 regarding the acceptance of a closure report filed by Delhi Police in the sexual harassment case involving former Wrestling Federation of India chief and ex-BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The case, which includes allegations made by a minor wrestler, has seen significant developments, including the withdrawal of accusations by the complainant’s father.
The proceedings, which were held in chambers on August 1, 2023, revealed that the minor wrestler expressed satisfaction with the police investigation and did not object to the closure report. This report, submitted on June 15, 2023, recommended the cancellation of the case after the girl’s father claimed he had falsely accused Singh to retaliate against him for perceived injustices.
Despite these developments, the police have continued to press charges against Singh in a separate case involving allegations of sexual harassment and stalking brought forward by six women wrestlers. These charges remain under the scrutiny of the judiciary, independent of the proceedings involving the minor.
The case involving the minor initially fell under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which mandates a minimum imprisonment of three years for proven offenses. However, the police have cited a lack of corroborative evidence as the basis for recommending the cancellation of these charges.
