The Calcutta High Court, in a recent hearing, directed the parents of the victim at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to approach the Chief Justice’s bench for clarification regarding the continuation of their petition for a further investigation into their daughter’s rape and murder case. This directive was issued by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh after considering that the Chief Justice’s bench, headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, had previously mandated a CBI investigation into the matter.
During the proceedings, the petitioners’ lawyer expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing CBI probe, seeking to raise new issues not yet examined by the agency. The CBI counsel responded by stating that the investigation was still active, with three status reports already submitted to the Supreme Court following the initial chargesheet.
The case involves Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, who is the prime suspect in the crime committed on August 9, when the young doctor was attacked while resting in a seminar room during her break. Roy has since been charged, but the controversy has grown due to the involvement of other medical and police officials.
The court also noted that the Supreme Court is handling certain aspects of the case under a suo motu initiative concerning issues linked to the medical profession. This adds another layer of judicial scrutiny over the handling and processes followed in the investigation.
Justice Ghosh advised the petitioners to seek the necessary clarification before proceeding further, setting the next date for hearing on January 15, by which time the clarification should ideally be obtained.
