In a candid revelation at the NDTV India’s Samvidhan@75 Conclave on Sunday, former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud shared his admiration for cricket and named Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli as his favorite players among the current lineup. Despite his packed schedule and recent retirement, he tries to stay connected to the sport he loves.
Chandrachud, who served as the Chief Justice until November 10, expressed that while his professional commitments and age have limited his opportunities to play, he remains a fervent follower of the game. “My favorite game is cricket, but I do not get the time to play. Also, I have become a bit old to play cricket,” he remarked.
Highlighting his routine, Chandrachud mentioned, “I don’t get to see the live broadcast, but I watch the five to seven-minute highlights every night to see how Virat Kohli has played, how Ravichandran Ashwin has bowled, or if Jasprit Bumrah has bowled well or not.”
Virat Kohli, renowned for his batting prowess, and Jasprit Bumrah, noted for his distinctive fast bowling, stand out as his top picks among the current Indian cricketers. He also expressed his admiration for former cricketer Rahul Dravid, describing him as “always stable, always solid.”
Chandrachud’s tenure as Chief Justice was marked by his leadership in over 500 judgments and participation in 38 Constitution bench matters, including landmark cases such as the Ayodhya land dispute, the interpretation of Article 370, and the decriminalization of consensual same-sex relationships.
