The Supreme Court issued a stern warning to a lawyer during a hearing concerning the representation of women in the judiciary. The court’s sharp rebuke came in response to comments questioning the number of women judges in the apex court. The lawyer’s remarks surfaced during discussions on a plea for a 33% reservation for women lawyers in the Delhi High Court Bar Association.
Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, presiding over the hearing, expressed clear disapproval of the remarks, emphasizing that such comments could undermine the judiciary’s dignity. Justice Kant admonished the advocate, stating, “If you are to play to the gallery by saying all these things, then please do. Say it 10 times. You are adding fuel to the fire. Let the media hear it. Don’t mess with the court. Enough is enough. Pathetic. This is not the way the bar conducts itself.”
The bench subsequently refused to entertain further arguments from the advocate, choosing instead to focus on the broader legal issues at hand. The hearing has been scheduled for final arguments on November 29, with the judgment expected to be pronounced shortly thereafter.
