CJI D Y Chandrachud Highlights Constitution as a Tool to Combat Inequality

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud emphasized the role of the Constitution as a formidable tool in combating disparities, during his address at the 13th convocation ceremony of O P Jindal Global University. Speaking to the graduates, he underlined how the Constitution not only sets up institutions but also instills checks and balances to protect against inequality.

Justice Chandrachud urged the students to actively identify and confront injustices in their environments. “The Constitution creates structures designed to safeguard against both apparent and invisible inequalities,” he stated, describing the dual function of the Constitution in regulating the relationships within institutions and between the state and its citizens.

In a world he described as filled with “noise,” he encouraged the new graduates to serve as voices of reason, bringing clarity and rational discourse to the public sphere. “The voice of reason and sincerity resonates loud and clear,” he remarked, drawing on his experiences from countless hours in the courtroom.

The Chief Justice also spoke to the potential of the students to drive transformative change, viewing them as crucial stakeholders in the societal fabric. He stressed the importance of continuous learning and adaptation, even at the highest levels of the judiciary, to better address legal and societal challenges.
