CJI DY Chandrachud Rebuked a Lawyer, Warns for Strict Action

The Supreme Court of India frequently encounters intriguing cases, and Monday was no exception. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud sternly warned a lawyer about filing frivolous Public Interest Litigations (PILs). The CJI emphasized that if such a PIL was brought before the court again, he would take strict action.

A lawyer had filed a PIL, prompting CJI Chandrachud to question its necessity. “Why should we even hear this case?” he asked, adding that the lawyer seemed to file a PIL almost every week. “The government will do what it needs to,” the CJI said before dismissing the PIL.

The lawyer attempted to justify the PIL, citing its significance in light of the Nithari killings. However, this only incensed the CJI further. “If you file such a PIL again, we will impose a penalty on you,” CJI Chandrachud warned. He stated that he had thoroughly reviewed the PIL and found nothing worth serious consideration.

This isnโ€™t the first time the Supreme Court has dealt with such matters. Recently, CJI Chandrachud had given a lawyer some stern advice in a different case. The lawyer had been fined five lakh rupees and had approached the CJI. The CJI told the lawyer not to make allegations against the bench judges. He acknowledged that heated arguments can occur during hearings but stressed that judges never mistreat lawyers.
