Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva Appointed as New Acting Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court

In a recent announcement from the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has welcomed its new Acting Chief Justice, Senior Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva. This appointment follows the promotion of Justice Sheel Nagu, who took over as Acting Chief Justice on May 24, succeeding the former Chief Justice Ravi Malimath.

According to the notification issued by the Central Government’s Department of Law and Justice, Justice Sheel Nagu has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, previously a notable figure in the Delhi High Court, will now helm the responsibilities in Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Nagu for elevation from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, awaiting presidential approval. Following the approval, the pathway for new appointments was cleared, and the Central Government promptly issued the notification.

Who is Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva?

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva brings a wealth of experience to his new role. After graduating in Commerce in 1985, he pursued a law degree from the University of Delhi, completing his LLB in 1988. His legal career began in the district courts of Delhi, moving through the ranks to practice at both the High Court and Supreme Court levels.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013 and was promoted to a permanent judge in March 2015. On May 31, 2024, Justice Sachdeva swore in as a judge at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and within just a month, he has ascended to the role of Acting Chief Justice.

Justice Sheel Nagu, his predecessor, began his legal career in Jabalpur and was appointed as a judge in the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2011, where he served in various capacities including that of an administrative judge before becoming the Acting Chief Justice.
