As several states across India are grappling with an intense heatwave, the Calcutta High Court has taken a significant decision in light of the soaring temperatures, which have reached as high as 40 degrees Celsius in the city. Chief Justice T.S Shivagnanam has issued a directive exempting lawyers from wearing their traditional gowns until the end of the summer vacation period.
This relief comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting severe heat conditions for the next five days in Calcutta and surrounding districts. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious during this period.
Observing the weather forecast, the Calcutta High Court has decided that lawyers will be exempted from wearing their heavy black gowns until the court reconvenes after the summer holidays on June 10th. The court is scheduled to begin its summer recess from May 19th.
